  1. Baby Claire’s gifts

    October 15, 2012 by Peter

This blog post has been on waiting to be written quite a while now. As mentioned in this post, it will involve some projects I was working on. Why I didn’t blog about it earlier? Well, it where gifts for my new born niece! :D

She was born on the 6th of September, and her name is Claire. Because I’m not sure if her parents will appreciate it if I post photo’s of her, you just have to believe me on my word that she is VERY cute. ;)

When her big sister was born, we gave her a “My Life Story” Journal, to keep track of everything mentionable happening in her future life. So, for Claire we did the same. But of course I HAD to give her some hand made stuff! I will talk you through ;)

    #1 Sea animals mobile

    Sea animals mobile

It was hard to take a good picture, but I think it turned out okay. :)
Inspired by Ana Paula’s books, I combined some of her patterns to make a sea animal mobile. I made two before which had some “flaws”, so I mental noted that and fixed those flaws within this third mobile. :)

For the base ring, I used the pattern for the branch mobile out of Amigurumi Two. With my previous mobiles, I found it hard to evenly fill the ring up when sewing it together, so that resulted in a very wobbly and uneven ring. So, with this mobile I bought a styrofoam ring in a craft store, and used that to fill the crocheted ring. Because the measurements of the ring are completely different from the one in the book, I started by crocheting a chain that would fit around the ring. Then I followed the technique of the pattern by joining the ends of the chain (being sure it didn’t twist) and then crochet around till it was long enough to fit around my styrofoam ring, and sew it together with the ring inside. Because you’re not decreasing, it will not fit perfectly around the ring, but if you divide the “folds” a bit, It looks fine! :)

The attachment strings, connected to a ring, are made the same as the branch mobile. Only a bit longer. :)

For the sea animals are also patterns from Ana Paula.
The fishes are also out of Amigurumi Two. It are the “Little Fish and Her Daddy” pattern. Instead of switching two colors to create a scaled effect, I used a blended color yarn. I created a mommy fish by adjusting the colors of the daddy fish pattern. Mom’s are always pink. ;)
Before attaching the top fin, I sew on a small split ring. I used these to attach the string which is attached to the ring. I did these, because I saw with one of my previous mobiles, the string was getting thinner by the weight of the fishes. So I hope this will solve it a bit. Also, if you really want to wash the toys, you can detach them (because it’s a split ring).

The big jellyfish is from Amigurumi Toy Box. I’m such a big fan of that pattern, so this was a great opportunity making one. ;)
The baby jellyfish is a pattern which you can find on Ana Paula’s blog. It’s over here. I adjusted the pattern a little bit, so the top of the jellyfish is a bit more egg shaped instead of rounded. I added a round between round 2 and 3, where I crocheted 12 sc. Because it is an extra round, I skipped round 10. The rest of the pattern is the same! :)

The algae is again from Amigurumi Two, from the stroller toy “fish in the sea”. I adjusted it a bit; I made different lengths, and stopped at the point where you’ve got to chain and crochet again (so, a single algae instead of two in one).

While assembling toys and the mobile, I first attached the fishes to one half of the ring. On the other half are the jellyfishes. But, because they weigh less then the fishes, I added a tiny bit of rice in a pantyhose between the stuffing of the big jellyfish, so the total mobile would not shift to one side! :)

    #2 Fish plush

    Fish plush
I was sure I wanted to give my little niece a soft plush to cuddle with. So to fit with the mobile, I made the “daddy fish” out of Amigurumi Two, but with the chunkier yarn I showed you in the same previous post. He turned out so cute, bigger than normal and very soft. :)

    #3 Teddy bear cake

    When Sophie, Claire older sister was born, I made a special cake to gift and celebrate. Here is a picture of it;

    Sophie cake

So when Claire was born, I just had to make another cake. Because my cake decorating skills have grown, I decided to do something more complicated, but I still needed some inspiration to do so. That’s why I bought “Debbie Brown’s Baby Cakes”. I really love her work (that’s why I have a lot of her books, so buying this one was an easy choice) because she works a lot in 3D which most of it’s base is still cake. I wanted to do more projects like that, it’s why I started cake decorating in first place. :)

I really got inspired by the cover of the book (which of course is also a project in the book) so I decided to base my design on that cake.

This is how it turned out:

    Claire cake
Like I said, I based it on Debbie Brown’s design, but adapted a few things. For example, the heads where recommended to make from crispy rice, which I don’t prefer using, so I used cake truffles. That made them a bit heavy, but it worked out. :) And of course the color scheme and decoration is completely different. ;)
The inside was pink butter sponge, and it was covered with a layer of buttercream and fondant. The cake for Sophie had a special filling, cream cheese with “Muisjes”. If you are not from the Netherlands like I am, you really should read this Wikipedia page about “Muisjes”.
So, with this cake for Claire not having a filling, I added crushed Muisjes to give it the same yummy flavor. :)
Well, that was it! Claire’s parents where very happy with all of the gifts. And so was Sophie, but Claire has to grow a little older for she understands it ;)
